Silver Rim

The Silver Rim 2008 – 2011

In 2007 a new silver piece was sought by competition, and an asymmetrical dish called The Silver Rim, designed and made by Mary Ann Simmons, was chosen.

Inscriptions record the election of Barack Obama, the first black President of the United States, and the International Banking Crisis in 2008. The turmoil in the Arab world is also noted.

Locally, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Britain and Westminster in 2010 is highlighted, but the event of greatest interest was the marriage of Prince William to Catherine Middleton in April 2011

The Silver Rim

To mark the involvement of many of the Society’s members in the royal wedding, an engraving was made on a silver tray inside using a design from a small wedding cake tin given as a memento to the Abbey Stewards on duty that day. The design was by Peter Windett and Sally Mangum, and was reproduced by gracious permission of TRH the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.

The Silver Rim was filled by 2011 and a new silver piece for one year only has been created for 2012. Named The Silver Shard, it was designed by Peter Darvall and made by Mary Ann Simmons. It commemorates, among other events, the

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and the London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

A new horn box, donated by The Worshipful Company of Homers, will start the next century of the Westminster Past Overseers’ Society.
